Voter Registration

Requirements

Must be a U.S. Citizen

Must be at least 18 years old by Election Day

Must be a resident of Michigan and the City of Grand Rapids

Register in person at a Michigan Secretary of State branch office or the City of Grand Rapids Clerk's Office (or the clerk of your jurisdiction).​ Please bring photo ID.

Register by mail by completing the Voter Registration Application and return to Grand Rapids City Clerk's Office, 300 Monroe Avenue NW Grand Rapids, MI 49503.

 

Update Voter Registration

If you have moved recently you may change your address online through ExpressSOS, by mail or in person at a Michigan Secretary of State branch office or the City of Grand Rapids Clerk's Office.

If you legally changed your name, re-register to vote in person at a Michigan Secretary of State branch office. Bring legal documentation of the name change such as a marriage license or court papers.


Absentee Voting

Absent voter ballots are available to registered voters for all elections. A person who registers to vote by mail must vote in person in the first election in which he or she participates. The restriction does not apply to overseas voters, voters who are disabled or voters who are 60 years of age or older.

 

Eligibility

A registered voter may obtain an absent voter ballot if they are:

  • age 60 years old or older
  • unable to vote without assistance at the polls
  • expecting to be out of town on election day
  • in jail awaiting arraignment or trial
  • unable to attend the polls due to religious reasons
  • appointed to work as an election inspector in a precinct outside of your precinct of residence.

Military and Overseas Citizen Absentee Ballots

Eligibility Requirements (at least one of the following)

  • Active Duty: an active duty member of the Uniformed Services or Merchant Marine;
  • Family of Active Duty: an eligible spouse or family member of an active duty member of the Uniformed Services or Merchant Marine; or
  • Reside Abroad: a U.S. citizen residing outside the U.S.​

Complete the Federal PostCard Application (FPCA)​. Michigan does not require a witness signature. Return form to the City of Grand Rapids City Clerk by email at cityclerk@grcity.us, fax at 616-456-460, or mail to City Clerk's Office, 300 Monroe Avenue NW Grand Rapids, MI 49503
